IUPUI is Indiana's premier urban research university. The campus enrolls more than 30,000 students in 21 schools and academic units.
As the Dean of Students and as an educator, this incident of a student filing a false police report and implicating a fictitious person of color as a perpetrator of a violent crime plays to a despicable racial stereotype that saddens and outrages me.
Our most important work in the Division of Student Life is to build community. In what appears to be a moment of egregiously bad judgment, a single student's act has hurt us all. I have a great deal of confidence that the Office of Student Rights, Responsibilities and Conduct will complete their investigation and will hold the student most responsible for his or her actions.
What I am now left to consider is what is to be done with the rest of us. We have all been hurt and diminished by these acts. How do we move on? How do we engage our community? There are many ways an incident like this hurts each of us. How would you like to see your university move forward in a way that articulates our campus commitments of community, inclusion and diversity?
If you have any ideas on how our community should move on please email me (whitney@iupui.edu). I call upon student government, student organizations, democracy plaza and SAPB to consider how to engage our community on the important matters of race, culture, dialogue and community.
Karen M. Whitney, Ph.D.
Vice Chancellor For Student Life
Dean of Students
Every semester the Division of Student Life honors each of our IUPUI family members who have passed away by remembering them in a simple program called "Day of Remembrance." Those remembered include current students, former students, graduates, faculty, and staff at IUPUI or IU Medical Center.
Family and friends are invited to attend the Day of Remembrance which will be held Monday, May 4, 2009, in Room 305 in the Campus Center Building, 420 University Boulevard, from 12:30 – 1:30pm.
At that time, the names of those who are being honored are read aloud. Each family or friend is invited to bring a picture of your loved one to share with others during the program. The photo, of course, will be returned to you at the end of the service. You are also invited to say any words of eulogy in memory of your loved one. If you have any questions, please call (317) 274-4431.
