Establishing Services
Contact CAPS by:
- Phone - 317-274-2548
- Email - capsindy@iupui.edu
- Visit - Union Building, room 418
Typically, when you first arrive at CAPS, you will be asked to complete a brief set of paperwork. In most cases, you will then be scheduled for an intake interview with one of our counselors. During such interview, the student and the intake counselor make decisions about the type of assistance needed. Initial appointments are usually scheduled within a week of the student’s request. An initial fee of $15 is paid at the time of intake. Students requiring immediate assistance are seen the same day on an emergency basis.
Counseling Services
IUPUI CAPS provides counseling services to assist students with a wide range of concerns, including but not limited to:
- Anxiety/Phobias
- Depression
- Eating Disorders
- Grief/Loss
- Parenting
- Relationships
- Stress & Time Management

- Test Anxiety
- Trauma/Recovery
Many issues are addressed through one-to-one meetings with an individual counselor.
Relationship counseling is also available for two individuals wishing to address concerns between them. Relationship counseling may be appropriate for intimate couples, friends, roommates, etc. At least one individual must be an IUPUI student.
Group counseling is also available. Groups are often formed around specific concerns or interests. Click here for more information about group counseling.
More Information: How to Establish Counseling Services
IUPUI CAPS provides counseling and mental health services for IUPUI students. To request services, stop by our office during business hours and complete the initial paperwork (please come in 30 minutes before office closing, as it takes approximately 20 minutes to complete the paperwork). An application fee of $15 will be assessed at that time. You will be scheduled for an initial intake interview during which you will be asked to describe why you are seeking services. This appointment is scheduled based on your need and availability. Questions about your current life situation and background will be asked in order to understand the unique aspects of your situation. You will then be assigned a counselor to work with on an on-going basis, based on your particular concern.
Counseling sessions are typically 50 minutes in length and are often scheduled on a weekly basis initially. However, frequency may be adjusted to meet the needs of the individual. CAPS implements a short-term treatment approach and service extensions will be regularly reviewed.
IUPUI students are eligible for 6-free individual counseling sessions, after which a $10.00 fee will be assessed per session. Students participating in group counseling or psychoeducational seminars will be assessed a $5.00 fee per 90-minute group session. Relationship counseling fees are $30 per 90-minute session.
IUPUI CAPS reserves the right to refer individuals to other mental health care providers for concerns that are beyond the scope of practice at this facility.
Consultation Services
CAPS also supports an integration of personal and emotional development in conjunction with academic and professional growth. CAPS consultants are available to faculty and staff to assist in this process. Consultation services may be related to dealing with students, co-workers, or job-related concerns. CAPS consultants consist of licensed psychologists and licensed mental health counselors. Please call 317-274-2548 to request consultation services.
