Message from the Director
August 11, 2008
Greetings from the Campus Center!

Dan Maxwell, Director of the Campus Center
The new school year is right around the corner, and we are busy at the Campus Center preparing for a smooth beginning. This will be the first fall semester in the Campus Center. It is hard to believe that we only opened our doors on January 7, 2008. The spring semester brought many great memories from the very first day the students "took over" the place, to the opening of new homes for many of our services, like the Barnes and Noble Bookstore to the Indiana Members Credit Union, and for campus departments like JagTag, Enrollment Services, Campus and Community Life, and Student Life. We still have some room to grow and establish as the Student Media Center will begin to take shape, along with the Games Room and TV Lounge. We are still working hard with our colleagues at the IU Foundation for the last remaining projects for the Campus Center: bells for the tower, theatre and music practice rooms.
I am pleased to announce that we hosted over 2,600 events in the Campus Center from January 7 - June 30, 2008. These events ranged from a staff or club meeting to Jag Days, which brought in over 2,000 guests to the campus and the Campus Center. We have hosted events from many student organizations, departments and schools, along with IU Foundation, the Alumni Office, and Athletics. Starting this fall, we will be opening the Campus Center up to non-IUPUI clients. We will continue to track the use of the Campus Center and assure you that IUPUI --especially our students-- are our first priority.
There have been a few changes in our staff since the close of the spring semester. We have had Katie Robinson, Dave Mallon and Belinda Cannaday join our team. Katie is the Assistant Director for Finance and Administrative Services (aka the Business and HR Manager), Dave replaces Rachel Messenger as our graduate assistant, and Belinda replaces Rita Berning as our Administrative Secretary. Each bring great knowledge for their respective areas of responsibility and a strong work ethic to the team. We have had a successful search for a Coordinator for Technical Services, and I should be able to announce our newest staff member within the next week. The last position to fill will be our Coordinator for Events and Conference Services. We were blessed to open the Campus Center with Genevieve Novak in this position, and I am grateful to all of the hard work Genevieve put in to make our transition into our new facility. However, Genevieve found some new opportunities in Arizona and departed the Campus Center and IUPUI at the end of July. We are currently searching for a new Events Coordinator and hope to have this position filled by the first of September.
We just finished up a two day training with our student staff. They are ready for the new semester to begin. We have an amazing student staff who really make this place run on a day to day basis. They serve as Information Desk attendants, Set Up Crew for the meeting rooms, Event Services Assistants to help in scheduling the meeting rooms, Games Room Attendants, and Building Managers. We have an 83% rentention rate with our current student employees only losing to graduation, internships and academic commitments. We have a few new faces on the team and look forward to working hard for great service this fall semester.
When you walk through the Campus Center, you will notice the electronic signage outside each room is now working. The only exception in CE 264, and there are some networking issues that need to be worked on for that individual monitor. All the event information displayed is pulled directly from the Event Management System (EMS), the program we use to schedule the spaces throughout the Campus Center. The current background is a default and will be modified in the coming weeks.
We will be returning to the same hours from the spring semester on Monday, August 18th. Those hours are:
Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Sunday, 12:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Please let me know how you think we are doing. You can always send me your thoughts through the online suggestion box. I look forward to hearing from you.
Peace,
Dan
